How Often Should You Descale an Espresso Machine?.

How often should you descale an espresso machine? Every 4–6 weeks if you have hard water, every 2–3 months with moderate water, and every 3–4 months if your water is soft or filtered. There's no single universal number — the honest answer depends entirely on what's coming out of your tap.

What's not in question is what happens if you ignore it indefinitely: nothing dramatic at first, then everything at once. Limescale doesn't announce itself — it just quietly narrows every water path in the machine until something finally gives.

01.The real answer: it depends on your water

Hard water — well water, and most of the American Midwest and Southwest — deposits minerals fast enough to need descaling every 4–6 weeks. Moderate water, the most common case, is comfortable at every 2–3 months. Soft or filtered water can stretch to every 3–4 months without trouble.

Don't know which bucket you're in? A water hardness test strip costs almost nothing, or your city's annual water quality report will state it directly. If you're genuinely unsure, assume moderate and watch for the warning signs below.

02.What actually happens if you skip it

Limescale builds up inside the boiler first, acting as an insulator that makes heating uneven — your shots start drifting sour or bitter for no reason you can point to. Next it narrows the pipes and valves themselves, weakening flow and steam pressure. Left long enough, it can clog the solenoid valve outright or jam the over-pressure valve, turning a $10 descaling job into a repair bill.

None of this happens overnight. It's a slow strangulation, which is exactly why it's easy to keep putting off — right up until the day it isn't.

03.Signs you've already waited too long

White or gray flakes in the water tank or drip tray. Noticeably slower flow from the group head. Steam that used to roar now hisses weakly. Shots that taste inconsistent shot-to-shot with no other variable changed. Some machines add a dedicated descale light — treat it as a deadline, not a suggestion.

If two or more of these show up at once, descale that week, not next month.

04.Cheap insurance vs. the alternative

A full descaling session costs a few dollars in solution or citric acid and about 30–45 minutes, most of it waiting — full steps in our how to descale guide. A boiler or solenoid damaged by years of scale buildup costs a real repair bill, or the machine outright.

Descaling and cleaning are different jobs on different schedules — descaling handles mineral scale on the water side, cleaning handles coffee oils on the brew side. See our Breville cleaning guide for the other half of the routine.

FAQ

How often should I descale if I have hard water?
Every 4–6 weeks. Hard water deposits minerals fast enough that waiting longer risks visible flow and temperature problems, especially on smaller thermoblock machines.
Can I go longer between descales if I use filtered water?
Yes — soft or filtered water can stretch to every 3–4 months. It still needs to happen on some schedule; filtered water slows scale buildup, it doesn't eliminate it.
What happens if I never descale my machine?
Limescale insulates the boiler, causing uneven heating and flavor drift, then narrows pipes and valves, weakening flow and steam. Left long enough, it can clog the solenoid valve or over-pressure valve entirely — a repair, not a maintenance task.
Is descaling frequency the same as cleaning frequency?
No. Descaling addresses mineral scale from your water and follows the hardness-based schedule above. Cleaning addresses coffee oil buildup and typically happens every 2–4 weeks regardless of water type — see our cleaning guide.
